Thumb Rule for steel in rcc roof slab

Thumb Rule for steel in rcc roof slab

Steel required for 1 M3 concrete calculation is based on Thumb Rules, it is essential for any civil engineer, Site engineer or civil supervisor. They play and help a crucial role while taking quick decisions on site.Thumb rules help you in finding out the approximate quantity of steel in RCC structure and make solution easy using a simple mathematical formula and make smart decisions whenever needed.

But, while using these thumb rules, you must remember that the thumb rule never gives the exact or accurate results, you just have used them for approximate results.

How much is steel is required for 1m3 concrete not only based on quantity of concrete but it also depend on other factor, such common factors are discussed here. Quantity of steel required for 1 M3 concrete is based on following factors:-

1) type of structure (Load Bearing/Framed)

2) Purpose of structure (Load depends on the utility)

3) Type of dia of Bar

4) Size height of column and length of beam (in terms of height, as requirement varies according to construction i.e. whether horizontal or vertical. )

5) Most important is foundation type(depends on soil bearing conditions)

Now taking various Thumb Rule for Steel quantity calculation for 1 cubic metre concrete.

● Thumb Rule for Steel in Kg/m3

1) thumb rule for steel in rcc slab is 80 kg/cubic meter of wet volume of concrete

2) thumb rule for steel in beam is 120 kg/cubic meter of wet volume of concrete

3) thumb rule for steel in column is 160 kg/cubic meter of wet volume of concrete

4) thumb rule for steel in footing is 40 kg/cubic meter of wet volume of concrete

5) thumb rule for steel in rcc structure is 100- 120 kg/cubic meter of all calculated wet volume of concrete.

6) thumb rule for steel in rcc structure is 3.5 Kg to 4 kg/ sq ft of built up area.

● Thumb Rule for Steel in percentage

1) thumb rule for Steel in general RCC structure is 1% – 4% of wet volume of concrete

2) Thumb Rule for Steel in column is 2% – 4% of wet volume of concrete

3) Thumb Rule for Steel in beam is 1% – 2% of wet volume of concrete

4) Thumb Rule for Steel in footing is 0.5% – 1% of wet volume of concrete

5) Thumb Rule for Steel in slab is 1% – 1.5% of wet volume of concrete.

● Quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete slab

Thumb rule for steel in slab = 1% to 1.5%

Minimum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete slab is 1%, now 1% of 1m3 = 0.01 m3, and we know that 1m3 steel weight is 7850 Kg, so weight of 0.01m3 steel = 0.01 × 7850 = 78.50 kg, so minimum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete slab is 78.50 Kg.

Maximum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete slab is 1.5%, now 1.5% of 1m3 = 0.015m3, and we know that 1m3 steel weight is 7850 Kg, so weight of 0.015m3 steel = 0.015 × 7850 = 118 kg, so maximum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete slab is 118 Kg.

● Quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete beam

Thumb rule for steel in beam = 1% to 2%

Minimum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete beam is 1%, now 1% of 1m3 = 0.01 m3, and we know that 1m3 steel weight is 7850 Kg, so weight of 0.01m3 steel = 0.01 × 7850 = 78.50 kg, so minimum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete beam is 78.50 Kg.

Maximum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete beam is 2%, now 2% of 1m3 = 0.02m3, and we know that 1m3 steel weight is 7850 Kg, so weight of 0.02m3 steel = 0.02 × 7850 = 157 kg, so maximum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete beam is 157 Kg.

● Quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete Column

Thumb rule for steel in slab = 2% to 4%

Minimum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete column is 2%, now 2% of 1m3 = 0.02 m3, and we know that 1m3 steel weight is 7850 Kg, so weight of 0.02m3 steel = 0.02 × 7850 = 157 kg, so minimum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete column is 157 Kg.

Maximum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete column is 4%, now 4% of 1m3 = 0.04m3, and we know that 1m3 steel weight is 7850 Kg, so weight of 0.04m3 steel = 0.04 × 7850 = 314 kg, so maximum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete column is 314 Kg.

● Quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete Footing

Thumb rule for steel in footing = 0.5% to 1%

Minimum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete footing is 0.5%, now 0.5% of 1m3 = 0.005 m3, and we know that 1m3 steel weight is 7850 Kg, so weight of 0.005m3 steel = 0.005 × 7850 = 39.25 kg, so minimum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete footing is 39.25 Kg.

Maximum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete footing is 1%, now 1% of 1m3 = 0.01m3, and we know that 1m3 steel weight is 7850 Kg, so weight of 0.01m3 steel = 0.01 × 7850 = 78.50 kg, so maximum quantity of steel required for 1m3 concrete footing is 78.50 Kg.
