CALCULATION OF BRICK, MOTER & SAND IN BRICKWALL

CALCULATION OF BRICK, MOTER & SAND IN BRICKWALL

Introduction:-

Brick is most commonly used building material and used for constructing walls, roofs, paving floors, etc. The term brick is referred as a rectangular unit composed of clay. Bricks are available in different classes and sizes. The sizes of brick may vary according to the region. To know about Brickwork calculation learn some basic info on Bricks.
In this post you are going to learn
  • Classification & composition of bricks
  • How to calculate quantity of bricks at any given area.
  • How to calculate Cement, Sand or mortar required for brickwork.
  • RCC bed deductions in brickwork calculation
  • Brickwork calculation formula & many other frequently asked questions about brickwork on google.
  • Brick work calculator to find quantity of cement, sand or masonry required for brickwork with user defined values.

Classification of Bricks:-

Bricks are usually classified into two types:-
Fired brick and Non fired brick. and they are further Classified into three classes based on the quality of brick. “First Class, Second Class and third class bricks.”

Composition of brick:-

Alumina:- A good class brick consists of 20-30% of Alumina. Excess of Alumina in clay makes the brick crack and wrap on drying.
Silica:- In general, bricks are made with 50-60% of Silica in it. Excess of Silica in brick makes the brick to brittle.
Lime:- Brick consists of 0.8-2% of Lime in it. Excess of lime in brick may cause to melt and distort during burning.
Other constituents:- Magnesia, Sodium, potassium, manganese and iron oxide.

1. No. Of Bricks required for 1 Cubic Metre or 1m3. (Brickwork Calculation)

To calculate this follow the below Steps-
Step-1:- Calculate the Volume of Single brick:
Standard Size of Brick is varied according to the region. In India, the standard size of brick is 190mm x 90mmx 90mm.  Well, this method is same for any size of a brick. But for calculation, I am considering mostly used size of brick in globe.
the size of brick is 9″x 4″x 3″
Step-2:- Unit Conversion
Converting inch to m for ease in calculation. If you are unable to convert units use Google Conversion tools.
Total Volume = 9″x4″x3″ = 0.2286m x 0.1016m x 0.0762m
Volume of Brick in Cu.m = 0.00176980 cu.m
Step 3:-
Volume required = 1m x 1m x 1m

Total Volume Required = 1Cu.m or 1m3
Volume of Each brick  = 0.0017698m3
No. of Bricks in 1m3 = 1/0.0017698 = 565 Bricks
Hence, 565 bricks are required for 1 cubic metre or 1m3 of bricks.

2. How to Calculate No. of Bricks required in a wall of
10′ x 10′. (Brickwork calculation)

Bricks are bonded each other using 1:6 Cement Masonry. We generally adopt 10-16mmof thickness between each layer of Bricks.
Therefore, the standard thickness of Cement Masonry layer in Brickwork is 0.39″ or 10mm

Step 1:- Adding mortar thickness to brick

Size of brick is 9″x 4″x 3″
Add  0.39″ to all sides of brick (9″+0.39″, 4″+0.39″,3″+0.39″)
The size of brick with mortar thickness is 9.39″ x 4.39″ x 3.39″

Step 2:- Unit Conversion

For ease in calculation convert (9.39″x 4.39″ x 3.39″) inch to ft
= 0.78ft x 0.36ft x 0.28ft
Consider Front face area of the brickwork in calculating the no. of bricks
From Fig4: Front face area of brickwork = L x D
Area of Total wall (L x D) = 10′ x 10′ = 100Sft  [Front face area]
Area of Each Brick (L x D) =0.78′ x 0.28′ = 0.218Sft (With Mortar thickness)

Step 3:-  Deductions in brick masonry for Brickwork calculation.

RCC Bed is provided for every 3ft of height of Brickwork.
As per above figure Length and Height of brickwork is 10Ft x 10Ft Height,
For 10′ height  there must be 2 Beds in brickwork.

Dimensions of  RCC Bed in Brickwork calculation:-

The length of bed go up to the length of brick work and bed is attached to Columns for transferring the vertical load.
Depth or thickness of the bed may varies between 3″ to 4″. (Refer above fig)
(Let us consider the maximum i.e., 4″ or 0.33′)
The length and Depth of Bed is 10′ x 0.33′ [Front Face area]
Front face area of bed (L x D) = 10’x0.33′ =  3.3SFT
There are Two beds in brickwork so = 2×3.3SFT = 6.6 SFT
Deduct the area of RCC Bed from the above wall area for Brickwork calculation
Therefore,  100Sft – 6.6Sft = 93.4Sft
Front face Area of Each brick =  0.218Sft
Total No. of Bricks = 93.4/0.218 = 428 Bricks required (approx)
Result :- For 10′ x 10′ wall of Brickwork approximately 428 bricks required.

Quantity of cement, Sand or Mortar Required for Brickwork:

1:6 ratio of cement mortar is usually used for brickwork. In order to calculate the amount of Cement, Sand or Mortar required or brickwork firstly find out the amount of mortar required for brickwork.
Volume of Each brick = 9″ x 4″ x 3″ = 0.22 x 0.1 x 0.07 = 0.00154m3
As we know that, 0.39″ mortar thickness is added to brick size. Hence
Volume of each brick with mortar = 9.39″x4.39″x 3.39″ = 0.238 x 0.111 x 0.081 = 0.00228m3
Therefore, amount of mortar required for each brick = 0.00228-0.00154 = 0.00074m3
From above, No. of bricks required = 428 bricks
Volume of mortar required for 428bricks = 428 x 0.00074 = 0.316m3
After adding water to the mortar mix, it bulks and reduces the volume by 33% during wet condition. In order to calculate the dry volume of cement & sand or Brick mortar add 33% of extra volume to it.
Dry volume of mortar =  Wet volume of mortar x (1+0.33)      [33% of volume]
Dry volume of mortar = 1.33 x Wet volume of Mortar = 1.33 x 0.316= 0.420m3
1:6 ratio of mortar for brickwork which means cement:sand = 1 part of cement and 6 parts of sand.
Total parts = 7

Amount of cement required for mortar:

The qty of Cement required for Brick mortar = Dry volume of mortar x 1/7 = 0.420 x 1/7 = 0.06m3
Density of cement = 1440Kg/m3
Which means for 1m3 = 1440Kgs required.
For 0.106m3 = 0.06×1440=86.4Kgs

Amount of Sand required for mortar:

Similarly as Cement,  Sand is calculated in terms of m3
The Amount of Sand required for Brick masonry = Dry volume of mortar x 6/7 = 0.420 x 6/7 = 0.36m3
In terms of Kgs, Density of Sand = 1600Kgs/m3
For 0.36 = 0.36x 1600 = 576Kgs

Summary:
For Brickwork of 10′ x 10′ where each Size of brick = 9″x 4″x3″
  • No. of Bricks without mortar = 533 bricks
  • The no. of bricks with mortar = 458 bricks
  • No. of bricks  with RCC bed & mortar = 428 bricks
  • The quantity of mortar required = 0.42m3
  • Amount of cement required = 87kgs
  • The amount of sand = 0.36m3
